A gentle week in the Annapurna foothills for families, with stone villages, rhododendron forests and a sunrise over the Himalaya that children never forget.

  • Sunrise over Dhaulagiri and Annapurna from Poon Hill
  • Short walking days of four to five hours
  • Gurung villages and a cooking lesson with a local family
  • Porters carry the bags, children carry the snacks

About the trip

The Poon Hill circuit is the friendliest way to bring children to the Himalaya. The days are short, the paths are stone steps through villages and rhododendron forest, and the tea houses are warm, welcoming and used to families.

The highest point is 3,210 m, low enough that altitude is rarely a problem, and the view at the top is one of the best in Nepal: a whole wall of eight-thousanders lit up pink at dawn.

Along the way we stay with Gurung families in Ghandruk, learn to fold momos and visit a school. Tashi has a daughter of his own and plenty of games for the long stairs.
