Lead guide, Julian Alps
Sofia Novak
“Slovenia is small, so we take our time and see all of it properly.”
Sofia was born in the Soča valley and guides hiking, gravel and family trips across the Julian Alps. She studied forestry, so walks with Sofia come with the names of every tree, flower and mushroom along the way.

Why I guide
I grew up beside the Soča, the greenest river you will ever see. I studied forestry in Ljubljana and worked in the national park, counting trees and mapping trails, until I realised I enjoyed talking to the hikers more than the counting.
I started guiding families and small groups, and later gravel cyclists too. Slovenia is still a secret to many people, and I love being the one who introduces them.
How I guide
Curious and flexible. I stop for every interesting plant, mushroom and story, and I adapt the day to the group, especially when children are with us. Good food from local farms is always part of the plan.
What I love out there
- The emerald pools of the Soča
- Wild garlic and mushroom season in the forest
- Cycling quiet roads between vineyards in Goriška Brda
- A cold drink in a mountain hut after a long climb
Favourite places
- The Triglav Lakes valley
- Lake Bohinj, quieter than Bled
- The Kozjak waterfall near Kobarid
My pick
Soča valley gravel

“Gravel riding along the Soča is pure joy: emerald water, quiet roads, wine country and Italian coffee just over the border.”
