Lead guide, Iceland and the Isle of Skye

Finn Gunnarsson

“In Iceland, if you do not like the weather, wait five minutes. Then put your waterproofs on anyway.”

Half Icelandic and half Scottish, Finn leads our trips in both of his home countries. He has crossed the Icelandic highlands by bike, on foot and on horseback, and still stops for every waterfall.

Why I guide

My mother is from Skye and my father from northern Iceland, so I grew up between two windy islands and never minded the rain. As a student I cycled across the Icelandic highlands and decided that was the job I wanted.

Today I lead hiking, gravel and kayak trips in both countries. They are very different, but they share wild coasts, long light in summer and people who always put the kettle on.

How I guide

Prepared for everything. I check the forecasts, river crossings and road reports every morning and change the plan when I need to. Inside that plan, I keep things easy-going and leave room for every waterfall.

What I love out there

  • Hot springs after a long day on the bike
  • Puffins on the Westfjords cliffs in June
  • The empty roads of the highlands
  • Fish soup in a harbour café

Favourite places

  • Landmannalaugar's coloured mountains
  • The Quiraing on Skye
  • Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon at sunrise

My pick

Iceland highland gravel

“Riding through the highlands is the closest thing to another planet. Lava fields, rivers, hot springs and not a single house all day.”
