Why I guide

My grandmother ran a mountain hut above Canazei, and I washed dishes there every summer as a boy. The climbers who came in at night told stories I never forgot, so at twenty I trained as a mountain guide.

The Dolomites have changed a lot since then, but the huts are still run by families, and the light on the towers at sunset still stops conversations. Showing that to someone for the first time is why I keep doing it.

How I guide

I plan routes around the weather, the huts and the people in the group, in that order. I explain every choice I make, so by the end of the week you understand the mountains, not just the path.

What I love out there

  • Sunrise on the Sella towers
  • A slice of strudel at Rifugio Lagazuoi
  • Teaching someone their first via ferrata
  • Snow on the passes in late September

Favourite places

  • Lago di Braies before the crowds
  • The Puez plateau
  • The Lauterbrunnen valley

My pick

Dolomites hut to hut

“Six stages of the Alta Via 1, sleeping in the huts I grew up in. It is the best introduction to the Dolomites, and the food is unforgettable.”
