Lead guide, Finnish Lakeland and Lapland

Liisa Korhonen

“Every day outdoors should end in a sauna. That is not a suggestion.”

Liisa splits her year between canoe routes in the Lakeland and snowshoe trails in Lapland. She is a wilderness first-aid instructor and believes no day outdoors is complete without a sauna and a cold lake.

Why I guide

I grew up by a lake with a canoe, a sauna and very few neighbours. In my twenties I moved to Helsinki and missed the quiet so much that I came back and started taking people out on the water.

Now I follow the seasons: canoes and gravel bikes in the Lakeland in summer, snowshoes and skis in Lapland in winter. Finland is quiet, and I want people to learn to enjoy that quiet as much as I do.

How I guide

Calm, safe and unhurried. I am a wilderness first-aid instructor, so safety is part of every day, but you will hardly notice. I leave plenty of time for swimming, berries and doing nothing at all.

What I love out there

  • The northern lights over a frozen lake
  • A smoke sauna and a jump through the ice
  • Picking blueberries straight from the forest floor
  • Paddling at midnight in July, when it never gets dark

Favourite places

  • Linnansaari National Park
  • The fells of Pallas-Yllästunturi
  • Lake Saimaa's quiet bays, home of the Saimaa ringed seal

“Lapland in winter is magical, and this trip has everything: snowshoe days in the forest, northern lights at night and a sauna every evening.”
