Lead guide, Lofoten and western Norway

Ingrid Solberg

“The weather decides the plan. I just decide where we have coffee.”

Ingrid grew up on a fishing island north of the Arctic Circle and has walked every ridge in Lofoten at least twice. In winter she swaps boots for skis on the Hardangervidda plateau. She knows where the cloudberries grow and never shares it.

Why I guide

My father fished cod every winter, and I spent my childhood waiting for him on the quay, looking up at the peaks. The day I was allowed to climb them on my own, I knew I would never live anywhere else.

I started guiding friends of friends, then their friends. Now I share the islands with people from all over the world, and I still get nervous before the first view from Reinebringen, because I want them to love it as much as I do.

How I guide

I keep the pace gentle and the plan loose. Arctic weather changes by the hour, so we choose each day's ridge in the morning and always know a sheltered beach for lunch. Nobody walks alone at the back on my trips.

What I love out there

  • Midnight sun on a ridge with nobody else around
  • Fresh waffles in a rorbu cabin after a wet day
  • Spotting sea eagles from the boat
  • Skiing across Hardangervidda in total silence

Favourite places

  • Kjerkfjorden, reached only by boat
  • Ryten above Kvalvika beach
  • Segla on Senja at sunset

My pick

Lofoten ridge walk

Norway · 6 days · €1,240 per person

“It is the trip I would give my best friend: six days that show the whole of Lofoten, from white beaches to the sharpest ridges, with a warm cabin every night.”
